A great article written by Liz Fleming for France Guide Prestige 2010. Thanks Liz.

If your fairy godmother were to drop by to offer a career switch, she’d probably suggest Anne Davené-Vantalon’s job. What could be better than working as a personal shopper in the most glamorous spots in France, exploring chic boutiques for exquisite treasures—and all on someone else’s credit card?
It’s an occupation designed to make the most of Davené-Vantalon’s natural good taste and enthusiasm for helping others find precisely the right item, whether it be a private villa, a stunning designer gown or simply a tiny but much-loved treat. “One client,” Davené-Vantalon recalls, “contacted me for help in finding a cookie that his wife had particularly loved during a visit to Nice.” His wife’s birthday was coming up and the doting husband wanted to surprise her. The challenge was that he couldn’t remember the name of the bakery. “I searched the city, taking photos of shops and cookies and sending them to him until we found the right one,” Davené-Vantalon smiles. “Then I sent him a box by airmail.”
Davené-Vantalon’s services are customized to meet the needs of her clients. If shopping isn’t on your list of favorite pastimes or if, like our cookie enthusiast, you don’t happen to be in the vicinity, you can provide a list of what you need and your personal shopper will begin searching. “Unless the item requested is of a specific brand, most of my shopping is done at unique, creative multi-brand stores where I can find special items. Although I enjoy shopping for clothing and accessories, what I really love is gift shopping with, or for,my customers!”
Her hunting ground is the most elegant area imaginable—the French Riviera. “I work in Nice, Cannes, Monaco and now Saint-Tropez as well.” Even Davené-Vantalon’s commutes, and those she arranges for the clients who join her on personally guided shopping excursions, are chic. “Although most shopping tours are designed to be easily walkable, I can arrange transportation by car for Nice, Cannes and Monaco and by boat or helicopter for Saint-Tropez. I can also book accommodation in hotels or private villas.” She will, of course, obtain the best table for lunch.
Davené-Vantalon’s service leaves no detail to chance, but is less expensive than one might expect. Personal shopping fees are based on the price of the item purchased, and the amount of research required to find it. Perhaps the most important service Davené-Vantalon offers clients is her graceful entrée to the world’s most exclusive shopping scene. While a newcomer to such ultra-fashionable shops as Chanel, Celine, Hermès, Sonia Rykiel, Prada, Akris, Bottega Veneta and Armani might be intimidated by the often icily elegant shop attendants, Davené-Vantalon will provide a reassuring sense of belonging. She’ll also ensure that you make the most of trends, seasons and celebrations. Our personal shopper advises, for example, that “Saint-Tropez is going to be a very successful shopping attraction, but only during the summer months. Most shops close down by October.”
Ready to connect with your inner shopping muse and explore the glories of the French Riviera

This is this time of the year again. Do I need to remind you that La Grande Braderie de Saint Tropez is one of the not-too-miss events on the French Riviera? You will find true bargains, rebates are down to -50-70% or even more: a Versace tailored suit for 300€, a pair of Prada shoes for 100€, Swarovski jewels 60% off etc, etc.
Going There: Forget trying to drive or park in Saint Tropez, the Braderie is very and I am saying VERY popular. Why not try the shuttles or even better charter a yacht? Departures from Juan-Les-Pins/Golfe Juan click here, Departures from Nice/Cannes click here .
Going early or late: Head to the the Braderie on the very first day Friday if you have a specific item in mind, look for a pair of sunglasses or a very common shoe size (37 for instance); fashionistas are known to wait in line the very first day at the opening hour. The best items may go first; but if you wait until the final day on Monday you will also get the very best rebates, this is especially true for shops that will close for the winter until next season.
Pick where you will shop: All the shops in Saint Tropez have a different policy with regards to La Braderie. Some like Dior or Stuart Weitzman do not have any discounted items or sales. At the multi-brands luxury stores you will find true bargains from last year winter and some leftover from this summer like at Martine Chambon for instance. Also you will find winter ‘08 discounted items at the shops that close early November until next season.
Avoid some of the stands and market area: La Grande Braderie is getting more an more popular, and if it is true that there are true bargains, don’t be fooled by the many stands in the streets; pick your purchases carefully.
And finally if you want to make the most of your day at La Grande Braderie, why not hire your own personal shopper to benefit from the very best bargains that the Braderie offers during a Special Braderie de Saint Tropez shopping tour.
Finally some news… I admit I have been lazy and didn’t post as much as I would have liked on my blog. Last June I was contacted by a journalist from the magazine BThere, inflight magazine of Brussels Airlines. I spent a day, with her and a photographer, shopping in Nice, and she wrote a really nice paper with many tips and good addresses. Have a look…

The magazine will be online soon here check page 56 of the August release.

A brand new 4 star hotel opened in Théoule-sur-Mer with a splendid view of the red rocks of l’Estérel and the very blue Mediterranean sea, Tiara Yaktsa . Only 15 minutes away from Cannes, this little jewel is the perfect romantic getaway.
I visited it last week at midday and was very impressed by the view, as well as the gorgeous white day beds surrounding the infinity pool. I wished I had enough time to stop for lunch on the terrace, but never mind I will return soon…

It’s been a while since I have written a new entry in this blog, I have no excuses apart from being busy. And the Cannes Film Festival being just around the corner will not improve chance of me having more free time. Speaking of the Cannes Film Festival, I have been interviewed by the movie magazine Variety for tips to traveling in Style in Cannes.
I thought you may enjoy reading some the answers and maybe discover some addresses that I have shared with them. The full article by Monica Corcoran is here for some extra reading and information.
Name a secret place that a tourist would never find.
“I like Private Room, a small luxury lingerie store at 5 rue Tony Allard with a wonderful collection of exclusive ‘dessous.’ The shop owner designed the boutique like a boudoir with your very own private room on the top floor. There are exclusive brands like Carine Gilson, Nuits de Satin and Strumpet & Pink.”
What’s the best local delicacy to bring home as a gift?
“Canned olive oils are a favorite treat for bringing back a taste of Provence, and they’re easy to carry. For modern packaging and savory oils, try Oliviers & Co at 4 rue Mace.” (Be sure to check out tapenades by local chefs, such as Alain Lorca’s green olive and pistachio variety.)
How about a local tipple?
“Head to Cave Croisette at 151 rue D’Antibes for a large selection of wine and try a local one made with oranges called ‘le vin d’orange.’ It make a great aperitif.” (Seek out the young sommelier Giovanna Rapala and the offerings by local vintners.)
Which shop in Cannes has the best linens and pottery?
“For bed, bath and table linen, check out Ahimsa at 148 rue d’Antibes — they sell the collection of Mia Zia, which is modern and fresh linen made with traditional techniques and materials. The embroidery is absolutely gorgeous. Descamps (111 rue d’Antibes), a French brand, also offers high-quality contemporary linen. Two doors away, Sia is great for chic table decoration and pottery.”
How about the best stores to shop for kids?
“On the lower- to midrange, I like Le Phare de La Baleine (133 rue d’Antibes) for its French touch. On the higher range, head to IKKS at 71 rue d’Antibes for trendy kids clothes or to Sonia Rykiel at 52 la Croisette, which designs absolutely wonderful clothes for little girls.”
Shoes?
“On the high end, I like Jacques Loup (21 rue d’Antibes) for its large selection of designer shoes, the efficiency of its salespeople and the overall luxurious feel of the place. Tiny and always crowded Mercedeh Shoes at 130 rue d’Antibes sells gorgeous, French Riviera-style shoes and designer labels.” (Don’t miss the Mercedeh kids shoes shop a few doors down.)
